First it was the rumours circulating around the web (only a few months ago) according to witch the budget of the Delta force had been slashed, the unit had shrunk dramatically and the morale of its members was at an all-time low.
But now, the latest incident is even more revealing of the crisis that is hitting the renown thug-styled motorcycle force of the Greek police. On the evening of April 30th, a bus driving football fans to the Olympic Stadium in Athens for a football game was attacked by members of the Delta force: Apparently, the Delta were infuriated by the gestures that the fans were making at them from inside the bus, and so they stopped it and smashed its windows (!), physically attacking the driver in the process. Despite them denying doing so, the members of another motorcycle police force (the Zita force) who were nearby and witnessed the incident testified against them, and so the Delta force members spent the night at the police detention centre, as suspects of vandalism.
This apparent “lack of solidarity” between police has infuriated Delta police, with corporate media reporting that their applications to transfer to other police units are now in the tens.
