Next week’s General Strike in Greece extended to 48 hours

Moments ago the mainstream trade union of Greece, GSEE, announced that it will be extending next week’s General Strike to Thursday, 20 October, turning it into a 48-hour strike – the first one after June 28-29. The decision of the reformist union was taken under the mounting social pressure and rage against the latest round of austerity cuts in the country.

The Strike demonstrations have been called for October 19 (11 am, Mars Fields – Pedion tou Areos) and October 20 (11 am, Syntagma square).

Is there any particular reason the first strike is at this Mars Field place? Why not at Syntagma? And where is Mars Field anyway?

Yes, I read the wikipedia entry, and I tried google maps but I couldn’t find it through there, sheesh.

I still want to know why the protest is being held in this park as opposed to Syntagma.

Demonstrations always start there, diagonally opposite the Polytechnic, and they do end up at Syntagma.
