The photograph above depicts the newly appointed minister of infrastructure, transport and networks in Greece, Makis Voridis. Voridis is member of the far-right, populist party LAOS which participates in the government of ‘national unity’ with four members. Voridis was the same person pictured above, in 1985, holding a hand-made axe and forming part of a group of thugs roaming around Exarcheia in Athens, in search of people demonstrating against police operations taking place in the neighbourhood at the time.
Photo from jungle report.

Man, you Greeks have some real history and bitter beefs going way back. Here in the U.S., I feel like we live day to day, barely cognizant of what happened the day before.
What is everywhere repressed in this society is history: one’s own, with others, that of the whole, and above all, the mediations among the three. JR – if you live like that, you’re just totally dominated by the present of THIS miserable society and are completely separated from any notion of progress or repression over time. Fortunately, in Oakland, the General Strike of 1946 was part of the past that informed the recent strike. And the struggles in Greece, as elsewhere, need to be informed about the limitations (and strengths) of previous struggles if we’re all not to be completely fucked over and if we’re to begin to dominate the present in an informed way, aided by memory.
Yeah Jackcommon, it is like you have written your comment on the thesis of Walter Benjamin cited above.
