Supemarket was looted in Athens

A branch of a Super Market chain was looted on Saturday 26/11/11 in Exarcheia. A group of people filled trolleys with foodstuff and other goods and walked away distributing the goods to the people who were shopping in the near-by open air market and other passing by people.

Flyers thrown during the action. They write ‘Their Wealth is our Blood’ and ‘Appropriation from the Capital Everywhere’.

About two and a half years ago there was a similar action in Marseille, South of France. About 30 people went into a supermarket, loaded up a dozen trolleys and then tried to negotiate to pay half price or less . The manager said, “No – no negotiations!” at which point everybody just decided to leave without paying at all. This inspired almost all the other shoppers, who weren’t at all involved in the action, to leave with their full trolleys without paying. In Italy in the 1970s this was a common action – part of the “Can’t pay, won’t pay!” movement. I presume this is a kind of innovation of the current “Can’t pay!” movement in Greece.

Not really sure how I feel about these actions, unless they’re done on corporate grocery stores. Supermarket owners are usually just small business owners and are just trying to get by in the system the best they can. Then again, supermarkets usually represent this sort of grotesque bounty of goods while people outside are sometimes starving.

…and small business owners are quite often fascists who deserve to be expropriated.
