Tanzanian Community centre by Amerikis (America) Square in Athens vandalized by neonazis; immediate response with anti-nazi demonstration by anarchists, migrants and people in solidarity

What follows is a report by 1againstracism about the events of September 24th, in Amerikis Square, Athens. The same group of racists, fascists and nazis described below had planned to repeat their gathering on the eve of Sep 26, the day of the general strike. Hundreds of antifascists, anarchists and people in solidarity gathered in Amerikis square, while no more than a handful of the fascists had gathered at the same time.

Greek original

On the evening of Monday 24 September, between 10 and 11.30 in the evening, a group of shop owners and residents of the area visited the community’s centre and asked those present to leave. Once it was established by those gathered at the centre that it  was a cultural centre, and once the relevant documents were presented, threats were fired at the members of the community organization, should they refuse to close. On the following evening, there were about 10 members of the Tanzanian community in the building, when, at around 1 past midnight, a group of 80 members of Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn) visited the premises. Those gathered called the police, which promptly arrived. They then summoned the President of the community as well as the former president. The police led those gathered in the centre out of the building. A while later, at around 2.30-3.00 at night, the Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn) returned and ransacked the place.

This is in fact the original source of the translated excerpt, text signed by immigrant communities in Greece (plus video footage of the attack on the offices of the Tanzanian community).

The situation seems very far to me. I ve read this:
If it is really like this, if the golden dawn started to successfully provide social services for people on higher scale, you must expect their popularity on the rise.
Are the anarchists in Greece trying to do the same? If not, the whole leftist movement will be overhelmed by the golden dawnists in one two years.
Riots are not enough. There is need for everyday commited building of solidarity networks.

Yeah, indeed there is a need for selforganization. The fascists feed the people like beggars. Communistst and Anarchists should’nt do this because it is about selforganization and selfempowerment. People, who go to Golden Dawn have ever been lost for solidarity and socialism. We should not compete in this keind of social engineering. If most of the people will turn to Golden Dawn, there is nothing more to do in Greece. Probably the world will splitt of some day in a lot of different communities, scapes and tribes. Forget about people and nations. there won’t be a socialist Greece- hopefully there will be strong libertarian areas and communities……

“The fascists feed the people like beggars. Communistst and Anarchists should’nt do this because it is about selforganization and selfempowerment.”

It is about COLLECTIVE self-empowerment and COLLECTIVE self-organisation, everyone helping one another. Not standing aloof, judging them like a bourgoise moralist and justifying your inactivity by saying they should “help themselves.”

“People, who go to Golden Dawn have ever been lost for solidarity and socialism.”

People who go to the Golden Dawn for bread as an alternative to starvation are not necessarily lost, neither are people who have been on unemployment benefit or who have worked for a wage.

“If most of the people will turn to Golden Dawn, there is nothing more to do in Greece.”

And what will cause them to turn to Golden Dawn? Magic? People will only turn to the Golden Dawn if anarchists and communists fail to show that their ideas offer people anything. If the Golden Dawn are supporting people materially and anarchists are turning their noses up at people and refusing to help, then yes, unsurprisingly support for the GD will rise and support for anarchists will shrink.

Personally, i doubt “Emma Goldman” is an anarchist or a communist at all.

Oh Mr. Berkman, the old enlightment Bullshit…..
first, selfempoewerment has to be collectiv, never meant anything else.
The greec nazis are paternalistic, that is what i meant with they feed and treat the people like beggars- it is not a collectiv selforganization.

I am german, in my country we have experienced, that fascism is not a opinion. You can’t convince a nazi. People who go to golden Dawn for bread are -of course- not all nazis but ever lost because it is more than only a opinion, which could be changed. Again we should stop, thinking in nations to win for anarchy, socialism and so on. People who are already socialists, anarchists have to organize and fight for space.

Probably you are an Anarchist but truly of the ninteenth century. Have you realized, we are in the 21. century? Political opinions and ethics are not a subject of advertizing: “Come here, we got the bigger bread than the Nazis..”.

And second, convince the people to become anarchist? Is that what you dream of in the night? Maybe you are not an anarchist but an orthodox communist, like stalinist, trotzkist…These guys still believe in their political advertisement-shows.
