Updates on the anti-austerity protests 09/10/2012

19:00 Things calmer in the centre, police talks about 217 detainees during the day in Athens and 24 arrests. But people who were detained and just released say that there were many hundreds of people detained in the police HQ.

17:00 Really violent attack on the group of people who were on Amalias avenue from almost from every side, very few people on Syntagma now.

16:36 Fights still going on in the centre, at the moment there is a front on Amalias street next to the Parliament where police is trying to push people away but they defend themselves with stones. A block of demonstrators is sou rounded by riot police on Karagiorgis Servias street.

16:05 As the working day comes to an end, the crowd seems to increase. “Cops-Pigs-Murderes” has turned into the main and only chanting all around the center, chemical gases in the atmosphere, many injuries and many detains but thousnads remain in the centre.

16:00 Merkel and Samaras just started their speeches. The center of Athens is a battlefield where thousands of people remain around, fighting.

15:50 The last 50 minutes police is attacking without any provocation to the people on Syntagma Square people resist with stones and head to head clashes are taking place. The crowd which ran towards Panepistimiou street from Syntagma Square was also hit on the sides by more police officers. Tear gas and injuries on that stage. There are at least 3 fronts on the Square one on the corner of Panepistimiou and Amalias, another one on Amalias avenue and a last one on the lower part of the Square between Ermou street and the square. People remain on Syntagma and fight.

15:00 tension in front of the fence in Syntagma Square, Tear gas there and stand grenades.

14:36 Rally in Syntagma is getting bigger and bigger, while more and more people are being detained. Erikos Dunnan workers managed to throw things against the car convoy of Merkel and the Greek Prime Minister while the latter were on the way to the PM’s palace.

13:57 13 There are protest gatherings in Syntagma and Omonoia Squares.  High school students have been detained pre-preemptively in Syntagma and more in the 13th School of Nikaia in Peirea. The block of Dyktio has been attacked by the police in Exarcheia. Workers of Erikos Dunnan Hospital, who remain unpaid for several months now, when they tried to march from the hospital towards the place of protests and pushed back by riot police.

13:45 GMT+2 Angela Merkel just arrived in Athens while since the morning activists of Radical Left and Anarchist affiliations are being detained, grabbed by police  in front oft their home doors, or in the areas of  the city centre where protest activities have been scheduled. The number of detains is unknown.
