Talking about the ‘Greek Crisis’ one directly thinks of the financial aspects and consequences of this situation as covered by international media. The same cannot be said about another ‘Crisis’ taking place, namely the rapid upsurge of racism and fascism. The increasing popularity that xenophobia, racial and religious intolerance and fascism enjoy among the Greek society and state have not been given adequate attention. At the same time, such circumstances put the life and integrity of marginal groups (immigrants, minorities, homosexuals) under increasing threat. I CAN’T RELAX IN GREECE is an independent blog with the purpose of updating the non-Greek audience about related incidents. Its main activity consists in translating news from mainstream Greek media into English. In addition to that, it aspires to develop into a kind of archive of relevant material; therefore it also collects and uploads relevant material from international media, videos, etc.

How can anyone relax in a country where the financial Mafia have totally destroyed the social fabric of that society? How can anyone relax in a society where the authorities unleash a brutal army of repression on any dissenting voices? How can you relax in country where fascist elements are allowed to run roughshod over any opposition without any restraint? It will be a while before the Greek people can relax, first they have to destroy the existing corporate capitalist system and replace it with a system of co-operation, mutual aid and justice. No easy task.
The only relaxation anywhere comes either through death – or the death of this society and the birth of a world determined by the masses of individuals.
The problem with this kind of site is its focus purely on misery – rather than the movements and instances of struggle against this fundamentally miserable society. This is not to say that the facts here are not interesting, but the relentless focus on horror doesn’t encourage any fightback; it tends to exacerbate feelings of depression. There seems to be no perspective presented here outside of being “nice” and anti-racist.
It will not be simply by opposing the fascists/nazis/xenophobes/homophobes etc that the counter-revolution will be defeated. If people seek moronic solace in brutal gangs it’s partly because the struggle for a genuine community of struggle against hierarchical power is weak. In 2008 Golden Dawn, and their sick perspectives, amounted to zilch. But in part, this movement failed to develop because lots of workers – at least in their work – remained submissive to the leftist unions that restrained their efforts at independent oppostion (leftists who presented themselves as “nice” and anti-racist). And also because Greece didn’t inspire enough globally.
But this is beginning to change, as events elsehwere are showing (see, for example, “News of Opposition” on my site: http://dialectical-delinquents.com/?page_id=1443 ).
Until a global community of opposition seriously develops a movement even more significant than December 2008 in Greece, and develops a consciousness of its possiblities, of its ability to destroy all external authority and the rules and roles of submission/domination that fascism concentrates into a barbaric positive force, then NO ONE can relax.
